When Michael Phelps is seen as “just another person who trains at (the Olympic) level,” you know you’ve got an exceptional collection of swimmers. Men from Michigan’s varsity swim team as well as Club Wolverine made up one of the largest contingents at July’s Olympic Trials in Omaha and three swimmers with Michigan ties represent the United States in Beijing.

Urgent Need for Immediate Funding...
Although we have received sufficient pledges to meet our initial obligations to the City of Detroit, we have an urgent need for immediate additional funding in order to meet deadlines imposed by the City. The OTSC's next deadline is to raise $169,000 by September 8. If we don't succeed, the City intends to demolish the entire stadium unless we meet this deadline.

THE BRETT FAVRE SAGA
BY DREW LANE
"Being a sports fan provides many rewards. There are few I enjoy more than playing Monday morning quarterback. How many times have you disputed a called time out or one that wasn’t called … and been proven right by subsequent events? All this as you lay on your couch with thousands of hours less information than the coach who made the call.
The recent Brett Favre saga provided all fans and sportswriters this opportunity. Packer management, in a no win situation, fought hard to set new standards for blundering a delicate situation involving a beloved player. In the end they may feel they’ve done the right thing, but being right was immaterial in this matter.
There are two very important elements that made it foolish to play hardball with one of the NFL’s most popular players of all time.
First of all, Favre played great football last season. It seems beyond foolish to bet against an athlete who has the talent and will to still perform at a high level."

Two Michigan cities – Detroit and Ann Arbor – have been named among the 20 finalists in SportsCenter’s “TitleTown USA” contest on ESPN. The “TitleTown USA” series will name the nation’s top sports town through a process that included fan-generated nominations on ESPN.com, a panel of judges who pared down the nominations, and – ultimately - online voting by fans. The winning city will be unveiled on SportsCenter on Sunday, July 27 at 11 p.m. ET.
“’TitleTown USA’ is another great opportunity for SportsCenter to interact with sports fans,” said Mark Gross, senior vice president and managing editor, studio production. “Along the way, the series will raise some topical debate, refocus attention to the unique relationships fans have with their teams, and tell great stories that connect the heartstrings of well-known, and perhaps not-so-well-known, teams to their towns.”

Draft Observations, Day One:
Posted By: Michael Niziolek
Date: 2008-04-27
Lions:
- Getting an extra three and a five by trading down two spots was a smart move by the Lions, the players they thought might slip to them at 15 were long gone and squeezing extra value out of picks is what you need to do when you are rebuilding
- I have no problem with the Lions drafting a lineman at 17, but I thought the player they picked, Gosder Cherilus from Boston College, was a little curious. First, he played Guard at B.C. and the Lions will want him at right tackle. Second, he wasn’t the highest lineman on the board. The Lions could of drafted a higher rated tackle and slotted him into his natural position, instead of overdrafting (Mel Kiper had Cherilus at 32 on his board) they thought had good character.
- The Lions stayed away from taking a running back in the first two rounds, which surprised me a little bit, especially when Rashard Mendenhall slipped into the twenties. I thought the Lions might use that extra three they got earlier in the day and a two to move up and grab him. They’ll probably draft a running back on day two, but I don’t think it will be someone that will be able to step in and compete against Tatum Bell. Mendenhall didn’t make much sense at 15 because they needed to improve the offensive line so badly.
- No Roy Williams trade, not surprising, but if they don’t even talk about an extension this year and the Lions improve – will they have the guts to franchise him? And what will his reaction be?
Other Observations:
- The Lions were pretty conservative on day one, but so was everybody else in the NFC North. The Vikings traded three out of their top four picks for Jared Allen earlier in the week, and the Bears/Packers played it safe (like they normally do).
- Henne to the Dolphins was interesting for University of Michigan fans, since there is chance at some point during the year they will see Henne and Jake Long together again.
- With all the disgruntled receivers across the league you wonder if that played into General Managers thinking since no receivers went in the first round….

Oh my...stick a fork in the Wings cause they suck!!!!
Detroit sucks! Wings suck! Michigan sucks!
Reading national coverage really makes me throw up in my mouth a bit!
Everyone who doesn't know hockey is looking for the Wings to falter and puke out at the first opportunity!
Fortunately they are not the Toronto Maple Leaves!
Imagine being a fan of that team! Yikes! !
I'm not even old enough to remember the last time they were crowned the best team in the NHL and I'm 40!
I have to talk to my dad to hear about those good ol days.
Anyway..mark my words the Wings will triumph!
No other team has the depth, fortitude or experience to overcome two months of the playoff grind.
That's what determiners a true Champion!
Mark my words!
Pistons Honor All-Time Team
Posted By: Steve St. Pierre
Date: 2008-04-09
In honor of their 50th anniversary in the city of Detroit, the Pistons celebrated by introducing their All-Time Team last night before their game at The Palace against the New York Knicks.
Among those featured on the "roster" includes Dennis Rodman. Fans were told that "The Worm" would be in attendance for the event, but it was reported that he missed his flight and could not make it. During his speech to the crowd, Isiah Thomas, Knicks Head Coach and former Pistons legend, said that Rodman should have been there to join in the fun.
The event came a day after the NBA announced the members of the Hall of Fame's class of 2008. Of the seven total members, three of them have ties to Detroit: Bill Davidson, Pistons Franchise Owner; Adrian Dantley, former Pistons player and member of the All-Time Team; and Dick Vitale, Former Pistons Head Coach and current ESPN commentator.
Current Pistons players Chauncey Billups and Rasheed Wallace addressed the media following the Pistons' loss to the Knicks, saying that they were honored to be a part of the festivities and included on the official list of Pistons legends.

Detroit…With a 3-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets tonight, the Detroit Red Wings captured the 2008 Presidents’ Trophy as the National Hockey League’s regular season champion with a league-best 53-21-7 record (113 points). The 2008 title marks the Red Wings’ sixth Presidents’ Trophy in the 22-year history of the award.
The Presidents’ Trophy was introduced at the start of the 1985-86 NHL season by the league’s Board of Governors as an annual award to the club finishing the regular season with the best overall record.
Detroit has captured the Presidents’ Trophy with the NHL’s best regular-season record six times in the last 13 years. The last time an NHL team finished first in the league six times in a shorter span was when the Montreal Canadiens’ dynasty finished in first place six times in just 11 seasons from 1967-68 through 1977-78. During that stretch, the NHL was made up of between 12 and 18 teams. Detroit’s streak has been accomplished with the league consisting of 26 to 30 teams.
Pistons Victory History In The Making
Posted By: Steve St. Pierre
Date: 2008-04-02
The Pistons beat the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday night playing on the road without their three best players. It was a meaningless game in terms of standings, yet it may have been a glimpse into the team's promising future.
Playing without Chauncey Billups, Rip Hamilton and Rasheed Wallace, Detroit started off slow and had a 20-point deficit in the first half before cutting the lead to 5 by halftime. The Pistons started center Theo Ratliff in place of Wallace and went with a guard combination of Jarvis Hayes and rookie Rodney Stuckey to fill in for Billups and Hamilton.
The big story of the game, however, came at the end when Detroit featured a lineup of rookies Stuckey and Arron Afflalo in the backcourt with Tayshaun Prince, Jason Maxiell and Amir Johnson up front. It was this group that finished the game in which the Pistons came away with the win by a score of 94-90.
Before Prince returned to the game at the end, his spot was filled admirably by reserve Walter Herrmann. With the rest of the aforementioned closers, Herrmann was instrumental in the team's comeback, providing energy and production at both ends of the floor. Also making positive contributions off the bench were guard Juan Dixon and rookie center Cheikh Samb, who recently rejoined the team after a second stint in the NBDL.
Stuckey carried the Pistons down the stretch, finishing with a career-high 27 points and sealing the victory with clutch free-throws in the closing minute. Afflalo, who has made recent starts for Hamilton, was brought off the bench in order to match-up with the Wolves' high-scoring sixth man Rashad McCants. Together, the two proved that, for an entire game, they could fill in for their All-Star teammates.
The Pistons decided to sit Billups, Hamilton and Wallace now so that they could have five days of game rest and focus more on practice time. It is likely that Billups and Wallace will sit at least one more game between now and the end of the regular season. Though the team was without their marquee players, the Pistons and their fans have to be extremely impressed with the way their young guns competed and demonstrated a developing bond within the group.

DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers today (March 23) placed outfielder Curtis Granderson on the 15-day disabled list with a non-displaced fracture of the third metacarpal in his right hand.
Granderson suffered the injury after being hit by a pitch in the fourth inning of yesterday’s game against the Phillies in Clearwater.
In 15 games this spring, Granderson hit .306 (15x49) with three doubles, three triples, four home runs and eight RBI.
Pistons Preparing For Playoff Push

The Pistons are coming off of two impressive wins against the San Antonio Spurs and New Orleans Hornets. Still, they know they have more work to do preparing for the postseason.
Detroit has some big games coming up this month, including tonight's game at The Palace against the Denver Nuggets and tomorrow in Cleveland against the Cavaliers. The team is reportedly set to activate backup guard Lindsey Hunter for the final 15 games of the regular season, beginning tomorrow night against the Cavs.
The team recently has left forward Walter Herrmann inactive, and it's likely Hunter could take the roster spot of rookie guard Arron Afflalo, who has seen his minutes dip in favor of recently-acquired veteran guard Juan Dixon. Though the Pistons were happy to play their rookies on a regular basis this season, they now want to begin setting the rotation for the playoffs.
Theo Ratliff, the veteran center who signed with the Pistons last month as a free agent after beginning his career in Detroit in 1995, has been fitting in nicely. He started his first couple games in place of injured starting center Rasheed Wallace and has since played an integral role off the bench, taking the spot of Herrmann.
Last week, Ratliff spoke with MIP. He says he's extremely happy to be back in the Motor City and finally competing for an NBA Championship. Ratliff says he stayed in touch with Joe Dumars, Pistons President since the two were teammates during Ratliff's first stint with the team. The veteran shot-blocker has always thought of the possibility of retiring as a Piston, and the team has already said he is welcome to return next season if he elects not to retire.
Dixon was apparently late to practice yesterday after being involved in a minor car accident. Flip Saunders, Pistons Head Coach, says Dixon is fine and had no problems in practice, staying late to focus more on shooting.

As we reported, the Pistons waived Flip Murray in order to sign a replacement center for Primoz Brezec, who was traded to Toronto for Juan Dixon. The team finally found their backup center on Tuesday, officially signing former Detroit draft pick Theo Ratliff.
"The Rattler," as he's known around the league, should give the Pistons an extra veteran defender in the paint who can provide energy and shot-blocking. He'll likely be used sparingly behind starters Rasheed Wallace and Antonio McDyess along with reserves Jason Maxiell, Amir Johnson and Walter Herrmann. The rumor is that he could be activated as early as tonight for Detroit's big match-up with the infamous Boston Celtics, who remain two games ahead of the Pistons in the Eastern Conference.
MIP recently spoke with Dixon following his debut in a Pistons uniform. Dixon tells MIP that he's extremely happy to be a part of a true championship contender and hopes to blend in nicely with the other reserve guards on the team's roster. He knows he'll be used behind rookies Rodney Stuckey and Arron Afflalo but plans on staying ready in case he is called on more towards the end of the regular season heading into the playoffs.
RED WINGS ACQUIRE BRAD STUART FROM LA

Detroit Red Wings General Manager Ken Holland today announced that the club has acquired defenseman Brad Stuart from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for the Wings’ 2nd Round Pick in 2008 and 4th Round Pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
“Brad adds depth and a level of abrasiveness to our blue line heading into the playoffs,” said Holland. “He’s a veteran player with playoff experience that will fit in well to our lineup.”
Stuart, 28, is currently in his eighth NHL season
Stuart comes in at 6'2, 210 pounds.
Pistons Waive Murray, Looking at Centers
Posted By: Steve St. Pierre
Date: 2008-02-22
As expected, the Pistons have waived Flip Murray. The team tried desperately to trade him this week but could not find any takers.
After trading Primoz Brezec to Toronto for Juan Dixon, the Pistons hope to sign a veteran center to backup Rasheed Wallace and give the team insurance against the bigger teams in the East like Cleveland, who now boasts a frontline of LeBron James, Ben Wallace and Zydrunas Ilgauskas.
The team is reportedly contemplating re-signing free agent Dale Davis, who has spent the past two seasons with the Pistons but has sat out this season deciding between retirement or returning for a 17th year in the NBA. Detroit could also choose to wait on a player like the New Jersey Nets' Jamaal Magloire, who could also be bought out of his contract and made available to a playoff contender.
Pistons Acquire Juan Dixon
Posted By: Steve St. Pierre
Date: 2008-02-21
The Pistons pulled off a trade before the deadline today, acquiring reserve guard Juan Dixon from the Toronto Raptors in exchange for the recently-acquired center Primoz Brezec.
The deal is considered a minor one as the Pistons already have a number of guards on their bench backing up starters Chauncey Billups and Rip Hamilton. The team was rumored to be shopping reserve Flip Murray for about the entire season but found no takers. There's still a chance the team could waive Murray and sign a backup center.
Brezec joined the Pistons two months ago after coming to Detroit with Walter Herrmann in exchange for Nazr Mohammed. He didn't play much but was vocal on the bench and showed a great deal of hustle when given court time. Dixon gives the Pistons a veteran shooter who can play either guard position and could take time away from the rookie duo of Rodney Stuckey and Arron Afflalo.
Both players are in the final year of their contracts, so neither team benefits financially from the trade.
Pistons Update
Posted By: Steve St. Pierre
Date: 2008-02-19
The Pistons are back from All-Star Weekend and feeling refreshed and ready for tonight's big game at The Palace against the Orlando Magic. Chauncey Billups and Rip Hamilton were both voted in as Eastern Conference All-Star reserves, while Rasheed Wallace was handpicked by David Stern, NBA Commissioner, to replace the injured Kevin Garnett. All three Pistons played well off the East bench and helped their team defeat the West 134-128.
Don't expect any major moves involving Detroit's roster for Friday's NBA trade deadline. The team is shopping reserve Flip Murray in exchange for draft picks but haven't found any suitors. If they cannot complete a deal, the team will either buy the veteran guard out of his contract or keep him on the roster until the contract expires at the end of the season. Murray would be vital insurance in case an injury occurs to the backcourt.
We should see Lindsey Hunter back on the active roster in about a month or so. Hunter has been inactive while the Pistons allow more playing time for rookies Rodney Stuckey and Arron Afflalo. The team knows they'll need Hunter's pressure defense in the playoffs, so the rookies will probably take a backseat once Hunter returns to the rotation.
LIONS OFF-SEASON RECOMMENDATIONS: OL and TE
Posted By: Michael Niziolek
Date: 2008-02-18
Free Agency starts in one week, and I continue my look at how I think the Lions' off-season should go, today we take a look at the team's Offensive Line and Tight Ends.
LIONS OFF-SEASON RECOMMENDATIONS: OL and TE
The Lions started the year with Dan Campbell as their starting Tight End, but an elbow injury he sustained Week 2 against the Vikings forced him out for the season. The previous year Campbell was decent in the pass game with 21 receptions for over 300 yards and four touchdowns, but his numbers are secondary to his blocking ability. When he is healthy he is one of the better blocking tight ends in the NFC.
He signed a five-year deal with Detroit in 2006, so it's highly unlikely the team will make any changes. Focusing on the run will give Campbell added value as a blocker, and the Lions will hope that he continues to improve in the passing game like he did before his elbow injury.
The offensive line is a completely different story.
Jon Kitna was under fire all year and was sacked 51 times, but that was the least of it. Offsides calls, holding penalities, injuries, age... it was like playing musical chairs only the chairs only had three legs. It will be impossible to overhaul properly in one season, but with a good offensive line free agent and draft class it's definitely a spot that should get some attention.
Left-tackle Jeff Backus is the Lions' best lineman by far. He's been dependable by starting all 112 games since the Lions drafted him out of Michigan in 2001, and his six-year $40 million extension signed in 2006 (with over $16 million in guarnteed bonuses) means he is a sure starter next year. Center Dominic Rajola has also been quite reliable, and with a reasonable cap number (five-year deal worth $17.5 million, $4.6 signing bonus) he is a good piece to build around along with Backus.
I would argue that the Lions should explore upgrading the rest of the line, and while it's unrealistic to expect Detroit to bring in proven blockers at three separate spots, they should at least bring in players to compete.
What I think they should do is take a look at a couple of young free agent guards that have shown an ability to truly excel in the passing game (while not losing anything in the run game) - Ryan Lilja and Jake Scott. Both are from the Indianapolis Colts, are young (26) and have Super Bowl rings. The Colts have done a great job signing lineman they build, but both guards should get lots of offers and it would be tough to retain both. If the Lions don't bring back Damien Woody, bringing in moderate-to-high price lineman to replace him wouldn't add that much salary to the cap next season. Plug either one on the left side with Jeff Backus and you shored up at least half the line.
Then I would use the draft, like they did last year with Manuel Ramirez, and get an offensive lineman in the mid-rounds, but this time draft a tackle. Have that pick, Jonathan Scott and George Foster compete for the right tackle spot.
In all likely hood what I think the Lions will do is bring Stephen Peterman and Edwin Mulitalo back as starting guards, and go with a cheap veteran free agent option at RT. I think they will draft a tackle, but not until the mid-rounds like I suggested.
I know the Lions want to build-up their defense, but I think their best shot at getting better and making the playoffs quickly is to build up that line.
Check back in a few days and when I'll start breaking down what the Lions should do on the defensive side of the ball.

Breaking Down the Lions Off-Season: QB and WR
Posted By: Michael Niziolek
Date: 2008-02-14
Last week I took a look at what the Lions should do at the running back position this off-season, this week we take a look at both the quarterback and wide receiver positions.
LIONS OFF-SEASON RECOMMENDATIONS: QB AND WR
Jon Kitna got some heat at the end of the year when things started going bad for Detroit, but I don't put a lot of blame at his shoes. He completed 63% of his passes, had over 4000 yards for the second straight season and a quarterback rating over eighty. I think two numbers frustrate people - his twenty interceptions and the fact that he was sacked 51 times - but again he doesn't really deserve the amount of criticism he took.
No running game, playing from behind, poor offense line play and poorly called games by Mike Martz all had a lot to do with the large amount of negative plays he accounted for.
I think the Lions should stick with Kitna next season, especially considering they spent a second-round draft pick on Drew Stanton last season. Plus, they have another young back-up in Dan Orlovsky. I think J.T. O'Sullivan, a Martz favorite, will be out and the team will spend time grooming both Stanton and Orlovsky as Kitna's eventually replacement.
Kitna remains a solid leader on the team, and seemingly wants to stay in Detroit, which can't go overlooked.
As far as receivers go, it's the team's deepest position by far.
Calvin Johnson wasn't the savior last year, but with a full training camp will get better and unlike like Charles Rogers and Mike Williams wants to actually improve. Shaun McDonald and Mike Furrey both played well, and are better than most of the free agents at available at the position.
The only question mark is Roy Williams, who is entering the final year of his contract. If the Lions feel Williams won't re-sign, or will break the bank, then it's possible the Lions will deal him before draft day. With Martz out, the running game could become the focal point of the offense, and I think trading Williams doesn't set the team back. Johnson is capable of being a 'A' receiver and bumping up McDonald and Furrey still gives you a trio of receivers that are better then most NFL teams.
The key is getting equal value for Williams. If the Lions can come away with a high-second rounder and a fourth round pick, that might be enough to get it done. You won't get a first-rounder, but for a guy you won't re-sign anyway two picks gives you a chance to improve your depth without sacrificing to much offense this year.
So last week I had the Lions spending a lot of money at the running back position by bringing in Marion Barber, this week I have them saving a lot of money to help get that Barber deal done. I think they should stand pat at the quarterback position, cut O'Sullivan, make Stanton your number two. Go with what you got at the WR position, unless you can't get two picks (one being at least a second-rounder) for Williams.
Last week I thought what the Lions will actually do differed a lot from my recommandation, this week I don't think that's the case. I think they will go into next year liking what they have at QB and WR, unless they get a good enough offer for Williams.
Check back next week for a look at what I think Detroit should do with their offensive line and at tight end.

Wings woes
Posted By: Jack Rosenberg
Date: 2008-02-12
Hello readers.
I wanted to tell you a little bit about what is coming up in the next issue.
MIP made a road trip up to Toronto Ontario to cover the Wings-Leafs big rivalry this past weekend (February 9, 2008) and let me tell you it was a tough trip for the Wings.
First and foremost Dan Cleary was seriously injured as he manned the front of the net and caught a puck in the jaw leaving a pool of blood on the ice.
It was very reminiscent of Jeremy Roenick's shattered jawbone injury in 2004 which almost ended his career.
While speaking with team representative John Hahn after the game I was told "Cleary had a fractured jaw and left the game immediately to go back to Detroit ahead of the team".
Outside the Wings dressing room was somber and our best wishes go out to Cleary for a speedy and full recovery.
Next...the Wings lost the game in what easily could have been a Winged Wheel romp but It looked like there was a spark missing, possibly due to concern for the fallen team mate?
At any rate the Leafs certainly didn't win the game but rather the Wings lost the game.
Later on I had a chance to speak with Red Wings GM Ken Holland about a rumor I have been hearing around town and I wanted to know the answer for myself as well as report back to the MIP readers my findings.
The big question, "is there a spot for former Red Wing and Stanley Cup champ Darren McCarty on the current roster"?
Holland told me "we are evaluating Darren's progress in Grand Rapids, Darren is basically starting training camp in February".
I think it is quite possible with (RW) Cleary's injury that (RW) McCarty could make it back this year!
Is McCarty back in NHL game shape? That seems to be the only question. But I can tell you I personally look forward to a "D-Mac" return.
Look for the full report in the upcoming issue of Michigan In Play!
Also coverage of the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony held tonight including Steve Yzerman, Desmond Howard and eight other inductees honored.
We would also like to send our best wishes for another recovery. Red Wings color commentator Mickey Redmond underwent surgery today to remove a small tumor found on the "Mick's" lung. He is expected to recover fully.
Fans who would like to write well-wishes to Mickey are asked to use the following address:
Joe Louis Arena
600 Civic Center Drive
Detroit, MI 48226
On the upside to all this doom and gloom...its still good to be in first place overall!
Breaking Down the Lions Off-Season: RB
Posted By: Michael Niziolek
Date: 2008-02-09
It's officially the NFL off-season so it's time to take a look at what the Lions 'should' do over the next few months to improve next season - position-by-position. So lets get started this week and take a look at the running back situation.
LIONS OFF-SEASON RECOMMENDATIONS: Running Back
Kevin Jones ended up playing in 13 games for Detroit, but for a second straight year ended the season with a very serious injury (ACL tear). It will likely require surgery and Jones will miss the off-season conditioning program for a second consecutive season as well. Jones will be back, but he remains a bit of a mystery. Can he stay healthy? Can he be a 25 carries-a-game back?
He had his best season his rookie year with over 1100 yards and 4.7 yards per carry. He hasn't had over 700 yards, he hasn't averaged over four yards a carry and he hasn't had over 200 carries in the three years since.
With Mike Martz gone Rod Marinelli will finally have the chance to focus the Lions' offense on their running game, but with Jones injury and T.J. Duckett being an unrestricted free-agent - they might not have a running back on their roster to do it.
Jones is still on his rookie contract, with only one year remaining, so the Lions don't have a ton of money invested at the position. They really could go anyway way here.
They could just re-sign Duckett and hope Jones comes back 100%. It's the least expensive option and Duckett might be come back if they promise him a shot at the starting job (or at least equal carries when Jones comes back).
To me it's the least attractive option, Duckett hasn't been more than a complimentary back his entire career and it's a very short term solution.
They could use the draft to get a running back, but the problem for the Lions is that they will draft right in the middle of the first round and their isn't great value to take a back in that position. They could try and get a first tier running back that slips in the second round, but the Lions have talked a lot about drafting defense and I'm not convinced they would draft a player that could make an impact day-one.
That leaves free agency, but this year that isn't a bad thing.
There is a lot of intriguing free agents, and if the Lions really want to build around the run it would be a good year to make splash and grab one of the top backs - which I think are: Michael Turner (San Diego), Marion Barber (Dallas) and Jamal Lewis (Browns).
Jamal Lewis is the least attractive of the three. Even though he is only 28 he has a lot of mileage (four seasons over three hundred carries) and will be looking for a long term deal that he'll finish well beyond the wrong side of thirty.
Turner and Barber are both really interesting options. They are both young (25 and 24 respectively), and don't have a lot of wear and tear. Turner has been stuck behind L.T. his entire career and Barber has split time with Julius Jones (another free agent). Turner has a big-play potential you don't see everyday and Barber is punishing runner that is a touchdown machine.
Dallas probably has the inside track on resigning Barber (he's a restricted free agent) and the market for Turner will consist of quite a few teams, so neither would come cheap. Their are some second-tier backs Julius Jones, Justin Fargas and Chris Brown to name a few, but those would be good back-up options. I think the Lions should really go after a guy that can create holes and break tackles since it will take time to rebuild their offensive line.
If I were the Lions I would offer a big deal to Barber. His power style of running matches Coach Marinelli's philosophy perfectly, he can break tackles at the line of scrimmage and move the pile forward himself. He'll cost you a significant amount of money, but he'll improve every aspect of the offense and can be a work horse.
Plus, you can get Jones healthy and have a really dynamic two-back offense that is all the rage these days.
If you offer a big deal and don't get Barber that might not be a bad thing either.
Any long-term offer might force Dallas to match, and while they like to spend money, it would definitely limit them in free agency.
So I think they 'should' bring in Barber to compliment Kevin Jones. Ditch Duckett, keep Calhoun and Cason for depth. Unfortunately, what I think they'll do instead is bring in a guy like Julius Jones, who probably won't cost them as much, but give them a decent second option.
Next week will take a look at the Lions' quarterback and wide receiver situation.

NHL FIRST STAR OF THE WEEK -- PAVEL DATSYUK
Posted By: Jack Rosenberg
Date: 2008-02-04
Datsyuk led all NHL scorers with seven points (one goal, six assists) as the Red Wings (40-10-4, 84 points) posted three consecutive victories and extended their lead in the League's overall standings to 16 points. Datsyuk earned points on seven of Detroit's eight goals, beginning with three assists in a 3-2 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes Jan. 30. He tallied assists on both goals in a 2-0 victory over the Colorado Avalanche Feb. 1 and notched the game-winning goal and one assist in a 3-1 victory over the Boston Bruins Feb. 2. Datsyuk is tied with linemate Henrik Zetterberg for the team scoring lead with 65 points (18 goals, 47 assists) in 54 games. He ranks second in the NHL with a +37 rating, trailing teammate Nicklas Lidstrom (+46).
Jan. Top Ten List
Posted By: Michael Niziolek
Date: 2008-02-01
We introduced a top ten list in this month's past issue, this month it was - 'Top Ten: Worst Lion Losses Since '02.' For those of you who enjoyed it here is an extended version. Make sure to check back next month for a new one!
--------------------------
The Detroit Lions’ season ended last month with an ugly eight game collapse. Unfortunately, most Lions’ fans have been through this before and here are the ten games that had all of you throwing your remotes at the television!
10. Sept. 18, 2005 Chicago 38, Detroit 6
Joey Harrington had some bad games with the Lions, but this one was probably his worst. He threw a career-high five interceptions, was sacked twice and only completed 19 of 37 passes. Chicago scored touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams.
9. Oct. 8, 2006 - Minnesota 26, Detroit 17
Fourth quarter losses are tough, but blowing a 17-3 lead by allowing two defensive touchdowns is unforgivable. Jon Kitna fumbled in the end-zone and then, in the final two minutes, threw an interception that was run back for a score. Injuries during the game to Daimen Woddy and Roy Williams didn't help, but neither did the four turnovers or 16 yards running they had.
8. Nov. 23, 2006 - Miami 27, Detroit 10
The Lions welcomed former quarterback Joey Harrington back to Detroit for the Thanksgiving Day game. During the game Detroit mocked Harrington by playing 'Piano Man' on the jumbo tron, but it was Harrington who made Lions' fans choke on some turkey. His three touchdowns helped erase an early ten-point deficit to beat his former team.
7. Oct. 16, 2005 - Carolina 21, Detroit 20
Steve Mariucci's third season as head coach started okay with the Lions going 2-2 to start the season, but bad teams find a way to lose and that's just what the Lions did. Panthers’ back-up quarterback Chris Weinke, who hadn't played in three years, came off the bench when Jake Delhomme got injured with only 2:56 left in the game and incredibly enough led the Panthers down the field. Fans watched in dismay as Weinke hit Ricky Proehl in the end-zone for a three-yard touchdown - and the beginning of the end of Steve Mariucci's tenure as Lions' head coach.
6. Sept. 10, 2006 - Seahawks 9, Detroit 6
The start of a 'new era' for Detroit. New coach, Rod Marinelli, new offensive coordinator, Mike Martz and new quarterback Jon Kitna - but same old Lions. They played the defending NFC Champion Seattle Seahawks tight all game, but like they have so often, found a way to lose late. Coach Marinelli decided against taking a shot at a 54-yard field goal attempt with three minutes to go, deciding to play the field position game instead. Of course the Seahawks marched down the field kicked a field goal and won the game.
5. Nov. 25, 2004 - Indianapolis 41, Detroit 9
Peyton Manning carved up the Lions with six touchdowns in less than three quarters, with four by halftime. The Lions tried to match Manning's touchdown total with fumbles, but ended up with only four (though they did add an interception). Harrington was benched for Mike McMahon which was about the only thing the Lions' fans had to cheer about.
4. Dec. 19, 2004 - Minnesota 28, Detroit 27
At 5-8 the Lions had slim playoff hopes going into their game against the Vikings, and with two fourth quarter touchdowns things seemed to be looking up. All they needed was their extra point after the touchdown to send the game into overtime..a foregone conclusion right? Not so much. The Lions long snapper bounced the ball to the holder and with eight seconds to go Jason Hanson couldn't get the extra-point off. The Lions were officially eliminated from playoff contention and the Vikings laughed all the way back to Minnesota.
3. Dec. 14, 2003 - Kansas City 45, Detroit 17
The Lions have been bad on the road during Matt Millen's tenure, but this game put them in the history books - it was Detroit's 23rd straight road loss tying the record set by the Houston Oilers in the 1980s. The Lions helped the Chiefs’ offense play a perfect game, literally. Trent Green had a perfect passing rating (158.3) with 341 yards and three touchdowns.
2. Dec. 9, 2007 Dallas 28, Detroit 27
The Lions tried to make a last-ditch effort at turning the season around when they hosted the NFC-leading Cowboys. They played with a lot of heart, and dominated most of the game...until the final two minutes. After keeping Tony Romo in check for most of the game the Lions secondary watched as Romo picked them apart for a game-winning touchdown drive. It put a stake through the hearts of fans with hopes for a return to the playoffs.
1. Nov. 24, 2002 Chicago 20, Detroit 17
A game no Lions' fan will forget. The 2-8 Chicago Bears, on an eight game losing streak, came back in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime. The Lions win the coin toss and..took the wind. They gave Chicago the ball and the Bears drove right down the field for a game winning field goal. In explaining his rationale for the decision Marty Mornhinweg described the fierce winds, so devastating they knocked the ball off the tee...leaving Lions fans to wonder if the coach had ever watched football in the winter?

Webber Agrees To Terms With Warriors
Posted By: Steve St. Pierre
Date: 2008-01-29
Finally, the speculation is over and Pistons fans can move on! Free agent power forward Chris Webber announced Monday that he is signing with the Golden State Warriors.
Webber is returning to the team that he began his NBA career with after coming back to his hometown a year ago with the Pistons. Detroit opted not to re-sign Webber last summer but has continuously discussed the option of bringing him back midseason. Last week, Joe Dumars, Pistons President, told reporters that he had spoken with Webber and told him that the team would not be releasing any of its current players in order to open a roster spot that would allow Webber to return.
The Pistons recently traded for two post players in Walter Herrmann and Primoz Brezec. In addition, the team has given more minutes and responsibility to young backups Jason Maxiell and Amir Johnson. Those four have split playing time with starters Rasheed Wallace and Antonio McDyess. Simply put - there just wasn't a reason to bring Webber back to this team. Golden State needs him more than Detroit does.
Meanwhile, Dumars is still actively shopping guard Flip Murray, who remains on the inactive list. As the all-star break nears, the Pistons hope that they can speak with other front offices around the league in hopes of dealing Murray for either an expiring contract and/or draft picks. For the time being, Murray has said that he's content with being a Piston and will continue to act professionally and do what he's told.
Detroit has announced that they have re-assigned center Cheikh Samb to the NBA Development League. He was with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, the Pistons' D-League affiliate, when he was elbowed in the mouth and had to return to Detroit and spend the holidays recuperating from the injury. Yet another big man on the Pistons' roster, the 7'1" rookie center has played just two games in Detroit and plans on spending most of the remainder of the season in Fort Wayne.

This month's issue of Michigan In-Play! has our exclusive interview with former Red Wings' Captain Steve Yzerman, we talked about a wide range of things including his vice-president role with Detroit, the state of the NHL and the success of this years Red Wing squad. Not everything could fit in the magazine, so for our loyal MIP readers here is some more with Stevie Y...for those who haven't read it yet, what are you waiting for? Click to the left and enjoy!
On his jersey being retired...
"It was a very special day, the Red Wings went out of their way to make it a big deal for me, I really enjoyed it."
Has he talked to the Red Wings current captain...
"We've had one brief conversation, about a subject, that's really all that's been. Nick's an intelligent guy, mature guy - a real professional - he doesn't need any help or guidance for me."
Will a player match his record-setting tenure as captain with one team...
"We've seen players sign 10, 11-year contracts, I think you might see players stay that long in one organization their whole career. I look at Syndey Crosby, I'm not sure the length of his deal, but I would expect him to remain a Pittsburgh Penguin for his entire career."
On being elected to the Michigan Hall-of-Fame...
"It does give me an opportunity to reflect on my career, it gives me a chance to see some people that played a role at various points in my career. I really appreciate the honor, here in Michigan, as you know being in the area over the course of history there have been some fantastic athletes inducted into the Michigan sports hall-of-fame."

Pistons News & Notes
Posted By: Steve St. Pierre
Date: 2008-01-21
We're already approaching mid-season, and so far, the Pistons have faired well. Coming off Saturday's loss to the Chicago Bulls, Detroit is currently sitting on top of the Central Division, second in the Eastern Conference and tied for second overall in the NBA at 29-12.
The team's had a rough schedule for December and January, but February provides a breath of fresh air. The Pistons are only on the road for five games next month and only play three back-to-backs. February also provides some rest for most of the league as NBA All-Star Weekend falls on Feb. 15-17 in New Orleans.
Since the beginning of the new year, Head Coach Flip Saunders has shortened the team's rotation. Aside from the starters, only reserves Jason Maxiell, Rodney Stuckey and Jarvis Hayes have seen regular minutes. Rookie Arron Afflalo and recently-acquired Walter Herrmann have played spot minutes in only a couple of games. Veteran reserves Amir Johnson and Primoz Brezec have dressed but are only playing in blowout games when the regulars are sitting early.
Detroit has decided to keep veterans Lindsey Hunter, Flip Murray and rookie Cheikh Samb on the inactive list. Hunter is expected to be activated soon to begin preparing for the postseason and will likely take the spot of Johnson. Samb is away from the team as he prepares to rejoin the NBDL after recovering from an elbow to the mouth last month.
Murray is apparently out of the Pistons' rotation entirely barring any injuries to the backcourt. The team is reportedly shopping him and has a month to complete a deal before the NBA's trade deadline. Believe it or not, the team is still interested in the possibility of re-signing Chris Webber, though he would only be expected to play about 10 minutes per game max. The Pistons could also trade Brezec, whose minutes would be completely taken if the team brought Webber back into the equation.
MIP spoke this week with both Brezec and Herrmann, who were brought to the Motor City together in a trade from the Charlotte Bobcats in exchange for Nazr Mohammed. Both players told MIP that they are excited to play in Detroit and compete for the NBA Championship. Hopefully, they'll both be around long enough to assist in the 2008 title run.

Detroit Red Wings General Manager Ken Holland announced the club has agreed to terms with defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom on a two-year contract. The contract will keep Lidstrom in a Wings jersey through the 2009-2010 season. In maintaining club policy, additional terms of the contract are not available.
“Nick has been the best defenseman in the world for several years”, said Holland. “He’s a great captain and role model who does everything right both on and off the ice. We’re proud to have him continue as a Red Wing for another two years.”
Lidstrom and the Red Wings play at St. Louis tonight (8:30 pm ET) and travel to Colorado tomorrow (9:00 pm ET). Both games are broadcast on FSN Detroit and 97.1 FM/1270 The Ticket.

TIGERS AGREE ON CONTRACT WITH DONTRELLE WILLIS
Posted By: Jack Rosenberg
Date: 2007-12-20
The Detroit Tigers today announced the club has agreed to terms on a three-year contract with lefthanded pitcher Dontrelle Willis, keeping him in a Tigers uniform through the 2010 season.
Willis started a National League-leading 35 games for the Florida Marlins last season, posting a 10-15 record and 5.17 ERA (205.1IP/118ER). A National League all-star selection in 2005, Willis has posted a 68-54 record and 3.78 ERA (1022.2IP/430ER) in 162 starts during his five seasons at the major league level.
“We are excited to sign an all-star caliber pitcher like Dontrelle to a long-term deal,” Tigers President, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager David Dombrowski said. “He continues to be one of the top young pitchers in the game and we look forward to having him be part of the Tigers organization for years to come.”
Acquired by the Tigers in an eight-player deal with the Marlins on December 5, Willis was selected the National League Rookie of the Year in 2003 and he finished second in the National League Cy Young voting after winning a career-high 22 games in 2005.
Pistons Trade Mohammed to Charlotte
Posted By: Steve St. Pierre
Date: 2007-12-19
In case you missed it this weekend, the Pistons announced a trade that sent center Nazr Mohammed to the Charlotte Bobcats in exchange for forward Walter Herrmann and center Primoz Brezec.
So far, the move has received mixed reviews. The obvious reason for Detroit to make this move was to save money - roughly $20 million. At the same time, the Pistons acquire more scoring and athleticism in their frontcourt.
That said, both newcomers are not exactly known for being big-name players who are going to instantly have an impact. Both Herrmann and Brezec have expiring contracts at the end of the season, and there's a chance the team could either trade either one of them in February or simply waive them. Several media outlets continue to report that the team is thinking about creating a roster spot to sign free agent forward Chris Webber, possibly by shopping guard Flip Murray.
While Webber would be an upgrade to Brezec, the Pistons would be wise to keep Herrmann for the remainder of the season. He can play either forward position, and he has a knack for scoring both inside and out. He plays with the aggressiveness that the team's bench needs in order to compete against the deeper teams in the NBA.
As always, MIP will keep you updated on the situation.
STATEMENT FROM THE DETROIT TIGERS

“The eradication of performance-enhancing substances in baseball and protecting the integrity of the game are the ultimate goals of the industry.”
Pistons Assign Samb To D-League
Posted By: Steve St. Pierre
Date: 2007-12-11
The Pistons waited until Monday to pull off a move that most fans have anticipated for over a month now.
The team announced that they have sent rookie center Cheikh Samb to their NBA Development League affiliate, the Fort Wayne Mad Ants. He's expected to suit up for them starting Thursday for their game against the Dakota Wizards.
As you'll read in the upcoming Dec. issue of MIP, Samb made two surprise appearances during the Pistons' recent west coast trip. Last year, veteran forward Amir Johnson spent a chunk of the season in the D-League and it paid dividends as it helped earn him a multiyear contract extension.
Hopefully, Samb can utilize his time away from the Pistons to focus more on gaining experience on the court. He has already worked hard on gaining weight and building strength and will continue to do so as his rookie season progresses.
New QB Not The Answer
Posted By: Michael Niziolek

If you listened to sports radio in Detroit last week, you heard a lot of talk and speculation about Cleveland Browns' Quarterback Derek Anderson. The restricted free-agent to be will cost teams a first and third round pick if they sign him this off-season (if the Browns don't match the offer).
Hosts and callers alike seemed to think that Anderson would be a great fit for the Lions, and worth the two high picks. Any time a team loses four games in a row unease begins to grow, but fans can't forget the main reason the Lions have struggled the last six years - lack of success in the draft. During his stay in Detroit over the last two seasons the Lions only, real consistent has been Jon Kitna.
While Kitna has struggled a little bit during the team's losing streak - mostly late in games - a lot of that has to do with the Lions having to play from behind. He has been forced to throw passes he normally wouldn't because the team has been down by ten or more points going into the second half.
The Lions' offensive line also has been a huge part of Kitna's struggles. The Lions have had injuries and inconsistent play across the line, it has been like a game of musical chairs. Players out of position, switching from the left-side to the right-side, it's a mess. It's a miracle Kitna hasn't been seriously injured.
If you break down his numbers (and remember he has the league's worst offensive line) Kitna has over 3,000 yards and he is sixth in the league ahead of Peyton Manning, Matt Hasselback and the afore mentioned Derek Anderson. His 66% compeletion percentage is in the league's top ten and his 87.8 QB rating is top-15. Kitna's only numbers that make you scratch your head a little is his touchdown to interception ratio.
Kitna has 14 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, but with the complement of wide-recievers he has you'd like to see a more positive ratio. Last season he had similar problems with 21 touchdowns and 22 interceptions, but do people really think with this same roster Derek Anderson would have more success? And would Anderson's 24 touchdowns really make a difference? The Lions road losses have been by an average of 26 points this season, one player isn't going to make that up, especially at that kind of cost.

Lions Vs. Vikings Preview
Posted By: Michael Niziolek
Date: 2007-11-28
The Detroit Lions head to Minnesota this weekend for a huge divisional match-up against the Vikings. The Vikings are coming off their first back-to-back wins of the season and their 41-17 beat down of the New York Giants, while the Lions are now barely hanging on to the final NFC Wild Card Spot.
A three game losing streak has put the brakes on all the feel good emotions coming out of Detroit. At 6-2 the team looked like a near lock for the playoffs, but find themselves instead with six teams at 5-6 breathing down their necks – which includes the Vikings.
Here is a breakdown of the teams and how they match up:
Quarterback: ADVANTAGE LIONS
In Week Two, the Lions won an exciting game in overtime against the Vikings 20-17, thanks in large part to the poor performance of the Vikings’ quarterback Tarvaris Jackson In the teams’ first match up Jackson had his worst game of the year throwing four interceptions and averaging only five yards a completion in 33 attempts. While Jackson is coming off his two best games this year and Jon Kitna has struggled a little bit lately (especially down the stretch) Kitna’s arm strength and accuracy allows Detroit to have a playbook with infinitely more options then the Vikings. Kitna’s QB rating is still over 85 and with 200 yards this week will have over 3,000 yards again this year.
Running Back: ADVANTAGE VIKINGS
Adrian Peterson is probable, and that is a bad thing for Lions’ fans. Detroit’s defense limited Peterson to 60 yards in week two, but that was a long time ago. Peterson will get a second chance at a line that allowed over a hundred yards to Ryan Grant of the Packers last week, and who Grant is no Adrian Peterson. His health will be the biggest question mark, but Chester Taylor has played well in his absence. Kevin Jones hasn’t played consistent all year with only one hundred yard game and two games with more then twenty carries. 15 carries for Peterson will have a bigger impact then any back on the field for the Lions.
Wide Receivers: ADVANTAGE LIONS
By far the most lopsided category of the bunch. The Lions are four deep with Johnson, Williams, Furry and McDonald and probably have the most depth at the position in the league, while the Vikings have the least. If McDonald or Furrey were on Minnesota they would be the Vikings’ number one option. Bobby Wade currently leads the Vikings in receiving and only has a fraction of the numbers the Lions’ fourth receiver, Mike Furrey, has. Troy Williamson has not been the playmaker the Vikings thought he would be, and their lack of options hasn’t helped Tarvaris’ development.
Offensive Line: ADVANTAGE VIKINGS
The Lions have given up a league-worst 47 sacks this season and have had to continually move people around on the line. This Sunday will be no different, as Damien Woody will be moved to right tackle for the first team in his nine-year career. Ugh. The team has also had a large problem with penalties, which explains why they aren’t going with George Foster (who has struggled all season with false starts). The Vikings are very young on the right side with Herrera and Cook, but extremely experienced everywhere else led by center Matt Birk.
Defensive Line: ADVANTAGE LIONS
Kenechi Udeze is good not great, and Kevin Williams hasn’t been nearly as dominant as he was when he had 11.5 sacks in 2004. While they are very good against the run their pass rush leaves something to be desired. Detroit has had a consistent pass rush all year with DeWayne White and Kalimba Edwards taking advantage of Shaun Rogers shedding double teams and getting off the ball quickly.
Defensive Secondary: ADVANTAGE LIONS
Gerald Alexander has been a nice surprise at safety and along with Kenoy Kennedy has done a good job of limiting big plays, but the team doesn’t have a shut down corner and struggles in the middle of the field. Minnesota’s secondary makes plays when it needs to, Darren Sharper and Dwight Smith have played well off each other. They don’t have a shut down corner either and their corners, Winfield/Griffin, lack size that the Lions should be able to take advantage of.
Defensive Linebackers: EVEN
The young Chad Greenway is improving every week for the Vikings and E.J. Henderson has been great leading the team in tackles (91). The Lions counter with a lot of speed in Ernie Sims, Boss Bailey and Paris Lenon. Sims is flirting with a pro-bowl type of year, but so is E.J. Not much of an advantage for either side.
Special Teams: (SLIGHT) ADVANTAGE VIKINGS
Jason Hanson is 20/26 this year and has three field goals from over fifty yards, but has two misses from under forty. Ryan Longwell is 15/18 with no misses from under forty. Neither team has produced many points off of kick returns, and Adrian Peterson probably won’t be returning kicks for the Vikings this Sunday. The kick return team for the Vikings is slightly better then the Lions, and could make a difference.
Coaching: EVEN
It seems at times that the Vikings offense has succeeded in despite of Brad Childress, who has stuck by Tarvaris Jackson and he never seems to give the ball to Adrian Peterson enough. The Lions have a great offensive scheme, but have failed to be balanced. Rod Marinelli says he has the defensive players he needs, but they’ve yet to be dominant when needed.
TOTAL: Lions Advantage 4-3-2
BOTTOM LINE: Lions Win 24-20
The game will be another close one, but the Lions should get a victory. If the defensive line can get pressure on Jackson again that will go a long way to neutralize the Vikings run game - whether it’s Taylor or Peterson in the backfield. Even at his worst this season, Jon Kitna hasn’t lost a game like Eli Manning did last week. He shouldn’t face the pressure he has in recent weeks and he should have a little more time to distribute the ball to his playmakers. The Lions may have trouble in upcoming weeks against the Cowboys and Chargers, but for now I think they stop the losing streak with a win against the Vikings.

TIGERS AGREE TO TERMS WITH TODD JONES ON ONE-YEAR DEAL
Posted By: Jack Rosenberg
Date: 2007-11-12
The Detroit Tigers today announced that they have agreed to terms with righthanded pitcher Todd Jones on a one-year contract for the 2008 season.
“We are very happy to have Todd Jones back with the club next season,” Tigers President, Chief Executive Office and General Manager David Dombrowski said. “He is a quality veteran presence on our pitching staff and we look forward to having him back in the bullpen in 2008.”
Jones posted 38 saves in 63 appearances with the Tigers in 2007, marking his third consecutive season with 35-or-more saves. Jones is the Tigers’ all-time saves leader with 217 saves in a Tigers uniform and he is one of just 14 pitchers in major league history to record 200-or-more saves with one team. He also became the 21st pitcher in major league history to record 300 career saves, accomplishing the feat on September 16 at Minnesota.
Jones has posted a 3.93 ERA (1030.1IP/450ER) and 301 saves in 937 career appearances at the major league level.
TIGERS ACQUIRE JACQUE JONES FROM CHICAGO CUBS
Posted By: Jack Rosenberg
Date: 2007-11-12
The Detroit Tigers today announced the club has acquired outfielder Jacque Jones from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for infielder Omar Infante.
Jones saw action in 135 games with the Cubs in 2007, batting .285 (129x453) with 33 doubles, five home runs and 66 RBI. He hit .332 (79x238) in 66 games following the all-star break for the Cubs this past season.
“We are excited to add a quality major league outfielder like Jacque Jones to the Tigers organization,” Tigers President, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager David Dombrowski said. “He is a proven lefthanded hitter at the major league level that fits our club well in left field.”
A veteran of nine seasons in the majors with the Minnesota Twins (1999-2005) and Cubs (2006-07), he has compiled a .280 batting average (1255x4478) in 1,260 games. Jones has collected 164 home runs and 623 RBI during his career.
Infante batted .271 (45x166) in 66 games for the Tigers during the 2007 season, collecting six doubles, two home runs and 17 RBI.
Injury Update
Posted By: Steve St. Pierre
Date: 2007-11-06
As I stated in my last blog, the Pistons took a number of bumps and bruises during the exhibition season. Though rookie Rodney Stuckey is still expected to miss about another month with his broken hand, Rip Hamilton and Amir Johnson are back to playing ball.
Rip missed the first couple games of the regular season to attend to the birth of his son. He returned to the court Sunday night for Detroit's home opener against the Atlanta Hawks and played very well. Hamilton resumed his spot in the starting lineup and finished the game with 21 points, five assists, four rebounds and shot 67 percent from the field.
Johnson, on the other hand, has played a total of five minutes in the Pistons' first three games. He said after the game Sunday that his injury is fine and that he just needs to get back into game shape. He's expected to have a major role off the team's bench after signing a multi-year contract as a restricted free agent this past summer.
It was reported in our November issue of MIP that the Pistons were leaning towards releasing Ronald Dupree in order to get the roster to its 15-player limit. Instead, the team made a surprise announcement that they waived rookie second-rounder Sammy Mejia, who is expected to play overseas.

TIGERS ANNOUNCE TICKET PRICING FOR 2008
Posted By: Jack Rosenberg
Date: 2007-11-02
More Than Half of Comerica Park’s Seats are Priced at $22 Or Less
Still one of the best entertainment values in the city of Detroit, the Tigers on Friday announced pricing for individual game tickets for 2008.
During the 2008 season, more than half of the 41,000 seats in Comerica Park will cost $22 or less. While some areas will see increases of $2 per ticket for next year, prices remain unchanged on more than 12,000 seats. The average price of Tigers tickets for 2007 ranked 19th among the 30 teams in baseball and were 18.5 percent lower than the average cost of a major league ticket.
“Tigers baseball remains one of the best family entertainment options in the city of Detroit and across the region,” said Tigers President, CEO & General Manager David Dombrowski. “We are very proud of the fact that a family of four can still enjoy a day at Comerica Park for only $20.”
Full season tickets, which will go on sale in November, start as low as $810 per seat. Full and mini-season customers are also offered reduced prices compared to individual game ticket buyers.
“In addition to lower pricing, full season ticket holders have the same great seat for every game,” said Bob Raymond, Tigers Vice President, Marketing and Ticket Sales. “We have pricing and plans available to give our fans a wide range of choices.”
Pistons Struggling With Injuries, Inconsistency in Preseason
Posted By: Steve St. Pierre
Date: 2007-10-15
It's been a rough start to the new basketball season in Detroit, and that might be putting it lightly.
So far in preseason play the Pistons have sustained injuries to Rip Hamilton, Amir Johnson, Nazr Mohammad and rookie Sammy Mejia. Rasheed Wallace has been whistled for three technical fouls in three games. Coach Flip Saunders is so desperate for big men that he's had to use swingmen Tayshaun Prince, Jarvis Hayes and Ronald Dupree at power forward.
Though the aforementioned injuries are all believed to be minor, the Pistons have to be a bit concerned with the inconsistent play from their bench. Currently holding an exhibition record of 2-2, Detroit lost to both the Cleveland Cavaliers and Utah Jazz before squeaking by the Denver Nuggets last night.
All three opponents competed the majority of the time without their regular starters. The Pistons themselves have decided to rest their own key players in an effort to open more playing time for young players like Jason Maxiell along with rookies Rodney Stuckey and Arron Afflalo. While Maxiell has played well, the rookies have struggled to play at a consistent level on both ends of the floor.
Rest assured, the Pistons are not panicking. Saunders knows that his team is banged up right now, and any NBA rookie is going to struggle adapting to a faster, more-physical NBA game. Once the team is able to bring Johnson into the fold, along with easing the veterans back into their regular minutes, the Pistons should be able to begin putting their gameplan together.
For the remainder of the preseason, expect Saunders to work on improving the team's defense. While the starters have played well in limited minutes, the young Pistons bench has struggled keeping opposing guards out of the paint. As a whole, the Pistons must improve their rebounding.
Hopefully, having Johnson and Mohammed returning from injuries and coming off the bench will allow Detroit to anchor the paint more efficiently. It's definitely been an up-and-down exhibition season thus far, but fans should remember that we have not yet seen the entire Pistons team together.
TIGERS EXERCISE OPTION ON IVAN RODRIGUEZ FOR 2008

The Detroit Tigers today announced the club has exercised its option for the 2008 season on catcher Ivan Rodriguez.
“The Tigers are pleased to have Pudge back for the 2008 season,” Tigers President, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager David Dombrowski said. “He has done a tremendous amount for our franchise in his four seasons in Detroit.”
Rodriguez batted .281 (141x502) with 50 runs scored, 31 doubles, three triples, 11 home runs and 63 RBI in 129 games for the Tigers in 2007. He was selected to the American League’s all-star squad for the 14th time in his career this past season, his fourth selection as a member of the Tigers.
“Pudge remains a quality major league catcher and we expect him to be a key player for our club in 2008,” Dombrowski added.
He became just the fourth catcher in major league history to catch at least 2,000 games during his career in 2007, before finishing the season with 2,061 games caught to take sole possession of third place all-time in major league history among catchers.
In 17 seasons at the major league level, Rodriguez is hitting .303 (2495x8247) with 504 doubles, 45 triples, 288 home runs and 1,182 RBI in 2,152 games.
TIGERS EXTEND LEYLAND’S CONTRACT THROUGH 2009

DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers today announced the club has extended the contract of manager Jim Leyland one year through the 2009 season.
“After our conversation yesterday, we are pleased to extend Jim’s contract through the 2009 season,” Tigers President, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager David Dombrowski said. “We are very happy with the outstanding job he has done and with the leadership he provides our organization. We look forward to Jim managing the Tigers for a long time.”
Detroit completed the 2007 season with an 88-74 record, pushing the club’s record to 183-141 during Leyland’s first two seasons as the manager. The 183 wins are fourth-most by a Tigers manager during his first two seasons with the club. Mickey Cochrane (1934-35) and Mayo Smith (1967-68) both won 194 games during their first two seasons as the club’s manager to lead the way, while Bob Scheffing (1961-62) is third with 186 wins.
“I’m very grateful to Mr. Ilitch, Dave and the Tigers organization,” Leyland said. “I have enjoyed my first two seasons as the manager and I appreciate the tremendous fan support from all the great Tigers fans. I look forward to managing the Tigers for a long time.”
The 2007 season marked Leyland’s 16th season as a manager at the major league level. Prior to his two seasons with Detroit, he spent 11 seasons with Pittsburgh (1986-96), Florida (1997-98) and Colorado (1999).
September Baseball: Sad When Your Team's Hopes Dwindle

I'm not sure which is sadder: September baseball when your team has long ago been eliminated from playoff contention, or September baseball when the postseason hopes start swirling down the drain, slowly but surely. I think the latter.
Oh, how many September 1sts have come and gone in the past 15 years with the Tigers barely a blip on even the most optimistic of playoff screens? So we know of that heartache. But when you've got a shot as August expires, then you see that shot firing nothing but blanks the further the month goes on, well that just seems worse to me.
The Tigers, realistically, had an outside chance at best of making the playoffs this September 1st. But their chances weren't pie-in-the-sky. There was hope, if either the Indians or Yankees faded, that the Tigers could climb back into things. Well, neither happened (not even close to happened), and so now here we are, looking at Tiger elimination sometime this week, perhaps as early as tonight. Granted, many teams would like to stay in it mathematically thru September 23rd. But many weren't the best team in baseball at the All-Star break. And many more weren't defending AL Champs. Hence the bitter taste this week.
There's not much to say at this point. The Indians clinched the division yesterday, and they earned it. The Yankees will nail down the Wild Card this week, and they too aren't backing into the playoffs. The Tigers are going to be outsiders, and that's where they belong, based on their play in August.
So six games remain, and the only drama now is to see if the Tigers can reach 90 wins. They need to go 5-1 in order to do it. Last season, 100+ wins seemed assured when the Tigers found themselves with a 76-36 record in early-August. But they stumbled and finished with 95 wins. This season, 90 wins were all but guaranteed when the team was 57-36 in July. And look what happened.
It's why they play the full docket of 162 games, I reckon.
Cruel Irony: Carlos Pena Just What Tigers Need Now
Posted By: Greg Eno

The Tigers have a few needs heading into the 2008 season, and one of them ought to be a lefthanded-hitting bat with some pop. Pop, not popgun. They have plenty of the latter. Sean Casey, with his measly three home runs. Mike Rabelo, with his zero dingers when he bats from the left side. He doesn't have any the other way, either. Only Curtis Granderson and Carlos Guillen (against righties) are threats to park the ball into the seats from the left side of the plate. And neither of them would I consider power hitters, per se. Even not per se.
It seems that the lefty power bat that they could have used has decided to realize his potential a few years and two teams too late.
Carlos Pena, playing first base in near total anonymity for the annually wretched Tampa Bay Devil Rays, hit his 40th home run recently. That's 40th -- as in one season, not for his career.
I cannot lambast Tigers management on this one. I said my share of "good riddances" when the Tigers lopped Pena from the roster late in spring training in 2006. I, like them, grew tired of waiting for the talented but mega-frustrating Pena to put it all together. And his strikeouts were creating more wind than Lake Michigan in a Chicago winter.
He skidaddled off to Boston, played unremarkably, and landed in Devil Rays camp this spring, looking for a job. Many thought this would be his last chance to prove that he's a major league hitter in anything more than just theory.
Well, Pena has put it all together, alright. And not just in theory. Oh, he still strikes out more than a geeky, pimply kid at a school dance, but you can maybe live with those Ks if they're part and parcel of a 40-home run season. He has had some monster games for the Rays, but like I said, their games are like trees that fall in vacant woods; do they make a sound?
Pena, for sure, is doing his best to make noise. He finally, at age 29 and with his fifth big league team, seems to be shedding the word "potential" from his bio.
And, in cruel irony for the Tigers, he appears to be just what the team needs right now.
He was always a fine fielder. That hasn't changed. But how nice would Pena and his 40 homers from the left side look in Detroit right about now?
It's all a matter of timing. The Tigers didn't get it right, as it turned out, and Pena has, by hooking up with the talent-starved Devil Rays and resurrecting his career.
When is he a free agent?
Another One Bites The Dust? Doubtful

The Lions are at the Eagles this Sunday. One team is 0-2, the other 2-0. Probably not too unpredictable, had that been the projection before the season started.
But wait -- what's this?? The Lions are the 2-0 team? And the Eagles, perennial playoff contenders and Super Bowl pretenders, are the 0-2 club? What in the name of Gary Danielson and Ron Jaworski is going on here?
The Eagles blew a game in Week 1 at Green Bay thanks largely to a muffed punt late in the fourth quarter. And then, under the glare of the Monday night ESPN lights, the Redskins marched into Philly and left the Eagles wings clipped, 20-12.
The Lions, meanwhile, have beaten two of the NFL's bottom feeders, and not without some struggling. But they did it, and sport that nifty, Eagles-like 2-0 record.
The Lions haven't started 3-0 since 1980. Ahh, yes -- 1980. That was the "Another One Bites The Dust" year. Remember that? Billy Sims was a rookie. Danielson was making a triumphant return from a knee injury that caused him to miss all of the 1979 season -- a year in which the Lions started a rookie QB and finished 2-14. Hence the drafting of Sims. The Lions actually started 4-0 in '80, and a few of them, led by DB Jimmy "Spiderman" Allen, recorded a version of "Dust", the Queen song, with some cleverly re-worked lyrics.
See Billy run, you can't catch him with a gun
And another one's gone, another one's gone
Another one bites the dust!
Hey -- we're gonna get you too
Another one bites the dust!
OK, so it wasn't Grammy Award material. Coach Monte Clark wasn't enamored with the whole song idea -- which got a lot of radio play in the week after the fourth win. And his feeling of foreboding was proven true. After starting 4-0, the Lions stumbled home with a 9-7 record, which wasn't good enough to make the playoffs. That was also the year in which the Bears' Dave Williams ran back the OT kickoff to beat the Lions on Thanksgiving Day -- a killer of a loss.
The Lions' hastily-recorded song of crowing didn't see much airplay by mid-season.
The 1980 Lions opened with a stunning demolishing of the LA Rams, on the road -- 41-20. Sims scored a couple of touchdowns. The next week, in Green Bay (maybe it was Milwaukee; not sure), the Lions won again. Coming home, they beat the St. Louis Cardinals. The next week, again at home, they defeated the Minnesota Vikings.
They went into Atlanta with their perfect record and a music record, to boot. The Falcons, though, handled the Lions easily, 43-28, as they stifled Sims. From that point on, the Lions struggled to win consistently. After Week 14 they finally fell to .500. They won their last two, but the Vikings, naturally, had sewn up the division (thanks in part to a flukey Hail Mary win over Cleveland, courtesy of Ahmad Rashad's miracle grab).
I wonder if anyone has a recording of the Lions' version of "Dust". Maybe somewhere on eBay.
Conventional wisdom still says the Eagles over the Lions, despite the teams' asymmetrical records. Odds are the Lions won't go 3-0, nor the Eagles 0-3. That's OK -- I can't stomach the thought of another recording. As if coach Rod Marinelli would allow it, anyway. But I think the 1980 Lions snuck away to do their record behind coach Clark's back. Is there a similar ne'er-do-well on this year's Lions to match Spiderman Allen?
Thank goodness Dre' Bly has been banished to Denver. He's a candidate for such loose cannon type activities, methinks.
Kitna Leaves No Doubt That He's "The Man"

There will always be some people who aren't going to care for Jon Kitna. No matter what. That's fine. Some folks' dog house is like a roach motel -- once you check in, you never check out.
I was on the fence about Kitna myself. Too many costly turnovers to my liking, and always in the fourth quarter it seemed. I had a nagging feeling that he was in that bursting-at-the-seams category of the Mediocre Quarterback, in which so many NFL signal callers seem to reside. Good at times, but not at a level needed to win anything of any importance.
I'm not on the fence any longer.
I don't know whether Kitna is good enough to lead the Lions any further than a game or two into the playoffs, but I do know this: the Lions can ill-afford to lose him for any length of time. And when was the last time you could say that about any Lions starting QB and keep a straight face?
Kitna was fabulous in yesterday's thrilling, "I don't want it, you can have it" 20-17 OT victory over the Minnesota Vikings.
He finally put an end to the nonsensical turnover contest the two teams were engaging in by taking matters into his own hands -- literally. Re-entering the game midway thru the fourth qua
